What is the real reason Irish Travelers cover windows with butcher paper?

I recently drove through N. Augusta, S.C ping Murphy's Village. There are tons of large extravagant houses with lots of windows but all of the windows are covered with butcher paper. I asked a few of the locals who mostly replied it was to keep spirits away. Does anyone know if this is actually true? If it is, why build a house with so many large windows?
